Mercedes Gómez Benet

Mercedes Gómez was born in Mexico City. She graduated with Cum Laude from Mexico's National Music Conservatory after studying with Judith Flores Alatorre (Mex), and later with Urszula Mazurek (Poland), Marian Shaffer (USA), Marjorie Tyre (USA) and Nicanor Zabaleta (Spain).

She has represented Mexico at international festivals and premiered numerous contemporary Latin American works written for her. Some of these have been presented on her CD albums ZARPA AL AZAR (Urtext 1998), RAMAS (Quindecim 2006) and THREE CONCERTOS BY Samuel ZYMAN (Urtext 2013).

Together with Janet Paulus she is part of SONDOS, DÚO DE ARPAS since 1999. The duo has recorded ALMÍBAR (19th Century Mexican music), CARNAVAL (works for two harps by Armando Luna), ARPEO (music by contemporary Latin American composers) and DOS DALIAS. Ms. Gómez is since 2006 a member of the ENSAMBLE TIERRA MESTIZA, directed by Gerardo Tamez, with which she has recorded two albums: IDA Y VUELTA and FOLÍA Y SON.

She has written didactic theater plays for harp students: VANIA AND THE OPEN WINDOWS (that has been presented in Mexico, Venezuela, France and USA), and FRANCIS, THE CURIOUS BOY (performed in Mexico and Spain).

As a harpist Ms. Gómez earned a Master's degree at the Royal Conservatory in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2011. She is harp professor at Mexico’s National Music Conservatory since 1988. In 2016 she was elected Vice President for the Americas of the World Harp Congress, and currently she is preparing for a doctoral degree at the Complutense University in Madrid.
